Your body shifts from burning carbs (which turn into sugar) to burning fat - producing ketones for clean, steady energy.

Step 1

When carbohydrate intake is minimized, glucose levels decrease. In response, the pancreas reduces secretion of insulin and increases secretion of glucagon.

Step 2

The changes in these hormone levels prompt the body's fat stores to release fatty acids into the bloodstream, where they are carried to the liver.

Step 3

In the liver, the fatty acids are converted into ketones, which are released into the bloodstream.

Step 4

As more ketones are created, levels rise in the bloodstream. Within 1–3 days, the body enters nutritional ketosis, where fat and ketones become its primary fuel source.
